About drama and history

Those who work in the research field in history and other humanitarian sciences know the difference between sources and references as they depend on both of them in getting their scientific material… also, there is no absolute acknowledgment of what any of them may contain but actually both are subject to scrutiny, criticism and comparison.

The source can be a spoken account given by one of those who took part in the events or was an eye-witness… it could also be a journalistic material published to cover or comment over the event when it happened… furthermore, it can be an official document issued from an institutional entity… moreover, it can be personal journals for one of the decision makers or someone in connection with them… etc. All those are subject to internal and external criticism and to other rules of scientific research disciplines.

As to references, these are the researches and studies that tackled what happened with study, analysis, detecting contexts and surroundings, reading results and drawing conclusions… references, in turn, are subject to criticism and one cannot take what they contain as if it is the absolute truth.

Usually the one interested in studying a phenomenon or a time period is advised to read the reference starting from its title then directly its index and the list of its sources and references… if it was discovered that that reference is not well-structured in its research; meaning in its chronological order, thematic unity, or both… and it was clear that this reference mixed between what should be mentioned in the core of the research and what should have been listed in the drafts and indices… and that it adopted an obvious outrageous bias towards a certain opinion or even towards the givens of its point in an attempt to get around the scientific material with the aim of proving what the author wants regardless of the reliability or veracity of such opinion… further, it turned out that this reference depended on sources that are not of the first degree and on other references that are questionable regarding their relative objectivity… then, that reference is not credible to rely on.

Here at this point in specific, comes the fault in drama in general and in historic drama in particular… as a certain director may say that he depended on tens of references to get his material for his drama work without knowing that it is not about the number of references he referred to… and not about how much they weigh in kilograms; meaning the number of papers… but actually it is about whether those references are credible according to the standards we mentioned some of them above.

It is really strange that some of those sources are still alive and one can have their spoken account and ask them to provide what can prove the veracity of such account… and after this subjecting this account of that source to internal criticism to see how well-connected and consistent it is with the sequence of events… and before all this, how mentally and psychologically-fit this source is as he/she may be too old and is suffering from oblivion or Alzheimer… and perhaps he/she is trying on purpose to hide parts of the truth of what happened… after this, if we apply external criticism by comparing this account with other ones and by verifying the authenticity of the documents this source is providing… then this source becomes even more important than some references.

Dear reader… you can imagine a researcher who is already known to have chosen a certain topic in order to belittle those who participated in it… and to prove for himself and for those who encouraged him the veracity of the hypotheses he made, the sayings he promotes, the allegations he gives or the lies he wants to wrap in a dress of truth… also, one finds this researcher disclaiming the efforts he received from the one who supervised his research and tried to guide him as possible… that supervisor who tried to adjust the researcher’s distorted research discipline and what he got is that his researcher student abstained from acknowledging him – like what happened with that one whom they had as an auditor for a controversial TV series – when he published his research… that his professor disowned him in public… can a researcher with such description, either on the academic or moral levels, be trusted?

Criticism in research disciplines is similar to the knowledge branch of studying Islamic Hadith… I here mean al-Jarh wa al-Ta’dil or discrediting and accrediting… which in turn is associated to what is called Ilm ar-Regal or science of narration or biographical evaluation… as it was not enough to attribute the account or opinion to X of prophet Muhammed’s companions… but there was a whole scrutinizing search done over this narrator… meaning whether he existed or not… and how mentally, morally and behavior-wise fit this narrator was… and if he is trusted or not.

I believe many of those who are supposed to belong to the field of research, post graduate studies and teaching professions in university should be subjected to evaluation starting from their fluency not in the foreign languages related to their researches but in their Arabic language; meaning their mother tongue as some of them who became even university professors cannot speak a single correct Arabic sentence.

If someone had the chance to attend the discussion of a PhD or master’s degree, he would be appalled by the crimes committed against Arabic language… so one can imagine who things are when the references and sources are written in English or French especially if the research deals with an era or subject that definitely has documents or periodicals related to it in English or French.

Some will say they can seek the help of translators… this is possible… but the problem is that the translator is usually not aware of the whole image of the subject related to the document… and so, he produces an automatic translation empty of any perception of the context and what lies beyond words.

In my opinion, the relation between art works of series and films, and historic events will stay complicated and a matter of dispute… especially if those art works are connected to the current political events and go in the heart of the running conflict in the society, region and world.

Drama and history

If it is allowed to turn the biographies of prophets, messengers and pious men into TV series... and scenario writers stopped at the time when that prophet was contemplating about the nature of God, like prophet Ibrahim for example who worshipped the sun and then moon until the truth dawned on him and he believed that God is the one worth worshipping.

Another example, if those writers stopped at the time when a pious man like Omar ibn al-Khattab was atheist and they gave some details about this period of time in his life... Will anyone say that this is not true, thinking that such thing may degrade the status of the prophecy, message or the stature of those pious men who accompanied the prophet?... there is nothing shameful that prophets like Ibrahim, Moses and others reached the truth after they experienced times of atheism or did bad acts in their lives.

That is what I thought of when I followed the controversy over the TV series called al-Gama’aa or muslim brotherhood; that series supposed to narrate the history of muslim brotherhood… I did not care much as I consider this series a part of consecutive artistic works aiming at defaming the July, 1952 revolution and Nasser… such series of artistic works started early and contained what one can describe as inappropriate and untrue in terms of art critic and historical critic criteria. If we are about to count the articles, seminars, lectures, series and movies that had the same target of defaming the character of Nasser and smearing the image of July revolution, we will have unlimited book volumes and CDs… adding to this the efforts of other regional intelligence agencies here in our region and oversees as well and the billions spent on this. However, Nasser and the revolution stayed in the Arab and Egyptian collective conscience… also in other far stretches in Asia, Africa and Latin America… both Nasser and the revolution still occupy a great position in the heart and minds of people.

What I wanted to point to is the TV series’ conceited author who behaves like a God accepting no criticism… also that one whom they call the historian responsible for auditing the historical material and who described himself in his reply to what Dr. Khaled Montasser wrote in Al-Wattan newspaper, as the professor committed to the strict rules of scientific discipline… he also described Dr. Khaled as acting the same role of actor Abdel-Fattah al-Asri in the movie titled “al-Ostaza Fatma”.

Such unbelievable conceited behavior was not in any way present when we had noble knights like Alfred Farag, No’man Ashour, Mikhail Roman, Mahmoud Diab, Muhammed Galal Abdel-Qawi, Mahmoud Abu-Zaid, Abdel-Hai Adeeb, Faisal Nada, Mahfouz Abdel-Rahman, Osama Anwar Okasha… and others. I mentioned those people without chronological or status order as they will ever be a sweet-scented bouquet of flowers in the course of drama in general.

Such conceited behavior can only be found in those who lost their goal… and so they consider themselves sacred and above critic and criticism and seek the help of others who have the same empty conceited behavior and outrageous ability to misinterpret the historical material in order to achieve their targeted goal.

In this regard, I recall a bad memory with that so-called auditor of the historical material… it is a recorded episode you can find on Youtube interviewed by media figure Toni Khalifa… in this episode, I asked the other party; the auditor, to commit to the rules of research discipline of the science of history when he used to give his judgments and use the comparative form like “worse”, “dirtier” to the end of this… his reply was that we are not in a research hall in the university… I then replied that TV has more serious and profound effect on common people awareness than research hall and so it is more mandatory to commit to those rules.

I discovered that one of the reasons lying behind such behavior apparent in most of his interviews is that he was taught by another one who once flouted the rules of scientific discipline in studying history.

I remember the day when a PhD student was discussing a thesis about Sa’ad Zaghloul and his role in the political life… we were at the beginning of the seventies… the thesis supervisor – my professor, the late honorable Ahmed Abdel-Rahim Mustafa – wanted to do a favor to his student and so he brought someone whom he thought would sympathize ideologically with the researcher and enlisted him as a member of the discussion committee; that was the late great Ismail Sabri Abdallah who, once he finished his overall remarks over the thesis, throw his bombing words saying to then-PhD student: “You deviated from the proper scientific discipline when you dealt with Sa’ad Zaghloul as a revolutionary leader while he was a reformist one as he accepted to work in the regime institutions; parliament and cabinet… and so you kept misinterpreting the historical material to prove your point of view criticizing Sa’ad Pasha”.

That student later became a professor who supervised another student; that is the auditor of the historical material of that TV series… he committed the same deviation in research disciplines which his professor did before… and so I laughed when I remembered his description of Dr. Khaled Montasser as I remembered another movie when the actor Stephan Rosti said to Muhammed Tawfiq; another actor, who missed his target and shot him instead: “damn the one who taught you how to use it”.

Indeed, the blame in this respect should be for the one who did not teach his student how to use tools of scientific discipline properly… also, he should have taught him not to impose his ideological and psychological personal conceptions on the subject being researched… as in doing so, he would have messed with the material being researched.

I hesitated a lot before writing about this series… and then I chose to write some notes around it… the secret behind my hesitation is that the case became like one forcing himself to eat rotten food. Also, the image of Nasser and July revolution will not be affected in the collective conscience of the nation and other free nations just because a drama writer thought he is one of a kind as there are no real efficient peers to compare himself to… and so he decided to seek help from an unknown historian as the knowledgeable and efficient ones do not reply quickly to his requests… also, it is more difficult to deal with them unlike that unknown one who will rush to answer the request.

The last thing that made me put an end to this thing and not come back again to it is that our country needs every effort to bring its renaissance back and push its social powers to work and get busy interacting with the present and future more than opening the old files of Salah ed-Din ibn Ayyub and messing with Egypt political history in the fifties and sixties of the last century.

Life-time friend… attempt to stop Tsunami

I’m not about to discuss the artistic aspects of the TV series “Life-time friend”… however, I’d like to discuss the general side including the relation between the drama work and writing history… also, the timing chosen to air the dramatic work or publishing a book… third, I’d like to discuss the effect of this drama works on the collective consciousness and what results from this…

The second side I’d like to discuss here is the one related to how much those producing such dramatic works are keen on respecting the already-known history facts and how diligent they are to know the truth about what was not a known fact or event but it has to do with the circumstances surrounding the event… meaning the objective circumstances as to timing or parties involved…

First, I’d like to affirm that no one is above criticism except prophets… and even they, some believes are exempted from judgment in what is related to the revelation issue… otherwise, they are humans subject to all universal laws like everyone else…

Also, no one possesses indulgences of patriotism or objectivity to grant or deprive whoever he wants… however, it’s a matter of a historical scientific material that has its sources and references… and it’s about the ability to tackle this material as per the established rules of discipline in the branch of Historical Criticism…

Also, it’s about rules and scientific tools known by Arts academies and institutions and which are taught to students in phases of pre- and post-graduate studies… and if there was some kind of pioneering work that rebels over those rules and tools and provides an unprecedented new work… it comes after committing to the axioms of history and sciences of screenwriting and directing…

Hereupon, violating or overstepping these axioms on both sides; history or artistic aspects, reveals without much thinking that this dramatic work has an undeclared goal away from telling the historical truth or respecting objectivity…

In the general side, history does not recognize imagination but drama does… drama uses imagination to complete some aspects that serve the historical events and add more meaning to them without touching what is already established and documented of those events… otherwise, it would be forging facts… and of course you know that sometimes fake coin is more shining that an authentic one…

The drama series “Life-time friend” came in a very pivotal timing of transition in Egypt and the whole region from a state into another new one… a new state raising slogans of bread, freedom, social equality and independence of national will… like the case of Al-Karnak movie, that also came in a very pivotal timing when Egypt was being prepared to be ruled by those who looted it in the time of the unbridled Infitah… those who paved the way for Mubarak long time ago before he came to power…

In that movie, the trick was about magnifying and exaggerating the issue of oppressing freedoms, torturing and other things in the pre-Sadat era… and saying: “but now – meaning the Sadat-era – look, it’s the era of institutions, freedoms, security, safety, and also faith”… they coined that motto; “the state of science and faith” so that they can verify looting, stealing, monopolizing and collaborating with the USA and end Egypt’s Arab and regional role… etc.

In my opinion, that series aims at breaking the huge tsunami wave of nostalgia to Nasser… the idea, principles and goals the man personified… also, it aims at distorting the essence of his stances and not the stances themselves by focusing – falsely – on the man’s negativities and depicting him as the one who misjudges circumstances and who always takes the decision alone and as a result, commits destructive mistakes…

Also, the series did not pay attention to the background and circumstances that surrounded many decisions and stances… for example, nationalization… as the Syrian capitalism deliberately worked on destructing the economy by smuggling their money and taking loans unjustifiably from Syrian banks without paying back so that fall down can take place… and so nationalization was the only way to stop this conspiracy…

There is a very important document that reveals all the circumstances related to the experiment of the Egyptian-Syrian union; it’s the document of the tripartite union negotiations among Egypt, Syria and Iraq… this document included the wide open discussions that took place between Nasser and representatives of both the Syrian and Iraqi Ba’ath parties…

I believe it’s important to republish this document and reread it in a historical criticizing manner as per the established scientific disciplines… and not according to the wishes of those who want to cut our current historical course seeking bread, freedom, social equality and independence of national will… those who want to put an end to this nostalgia that raises up high posters of a patriotic national Arab-national liberal symbol like Nasser… they want to stop this normal healthy human nostalgia.
