Let us catch our breath

I know that humans are more important than rocks as stated in God’s doctrine… that is what we were told in the Holy Quran: “They ask you about the sacred month - about fighting therein. Say, "Fighting therein is great [sin], but averting [people] from the way of Allah and disbelief in Him and [preventing access to] al-Masjid al-Haram and the expulsion of its people therefrom are greater [evil] in the sight of Allah. And fitnah is greater than killing“, verse 217 of al-Baqara Chapter.

Therefore, I am one of those who believe that the Zionist crime taking place right now in threatening Al-Aqsa mosque, changing its nature, or working to knock it down is not only targeted at Al-Aqsa mosque… in my opinion, thinking in this way helps the Zionists complete their full crime against the Palestinian people and against all the human legacy opposing racism, aggression, and occupation.

Now, one definitely wonders: why has the Zionist state taken this step of targeting Al-Aqsa mosque in this timing in specific when the public image of currents of political Islam started to fade and falsehood of their ideology unfolded… including those who claimed to represent enlightened political Islam… also when an international, regional, and Arab cooperation began to stand against the Islamist terrorism and fight it as we see right now?

Why in this timing in specific has the Zionist state fueled this issue in particular that leads to reviving the Islamist argument saying that Al-Aqsa mosque – first Qibla to which Muslims used to turn at prayers, second holiest mosque, and place where Prophet Muhammed, peace be upon him, set off on his Night Journey of Isra and Mi’raj – is in danger?

I believe the answer is clear… we can start by saying that the Zionist state was not away from the establishment and reinforcing of that current so that the Arab nation and countries can fall into the mire of sectarian, doctrinal, and religious strife or Fitna… such a gloomy and deep mire where nations and peoples before fell into and kept fighting for hundreds of years until they wasted their energy and squandered their resources as known from history.

We can also relate this to what those Islamist terrorist groups became after the strikes they received in Egypt on the hands of the Egyptian army and police and due to the vigilance of its people… or in other Arab countries that stood alone or through international coalitions against this terrorism… and so a rescue scheme had to be drawn up for those groups so that they can remarket their ideology once again under the pretext saying: stop targeting the Islamic groups and go fight the Zionist state that does what it does to the holy Aqsa.

The answer could also be that the Zionist state means to embarrass Egypt in specific and put its regime and government in a difficult situation as what would be said and publicized for politically and in media is that the regime in Egypt has to take a decisive practical stance against the Israeli actions and must not just condemn them or call for restraint… and of course this practical stance requires giving the chance for the terrorist groups in Sinai to do what they can against the Zionist state… and that the Egyptian government should not only postpone any disagreement with the Islamist group Hamas, but also support it in every possible way including supplying it with arms so that it can take action against the Zionists and, in doing so, reduce the pressure over Al-Aqsa mosque.

There could be other more accurate interpretations than what I go for… but what I want to say here is that we – as civil powers in the Egyptian street in specific and the Arab one in general – should once again handle the conflict as it should be; a conflict between the right of independence and liberation against aggression and occupation… a conflict between the will of people seeking development and welfare and rejecting violence and war… against an aggressive colonial racist settlement movement which managed through aggression to occupy lands that do not belong to it and to seek support from its international colonial back in order to practice more aggression and keep flouting the humanitarian norms, international laws, and tens of resolutions of the United Nations (UN) and international organizations.

We have to catch our breath after being exhausted in engaging with political Islam currents and terrorist criminals… we were also consumed out of discussing issues it is time now to put an end to and take lessons from… atop of these issues is the political movement in Egypt since the 1919 revolution to July, 1952 revolution… and from July, 1952 to January, 2011 revolution… as going into arguments over disputed matters will do no good and will only increase the gap between constituents of the Egyptian mentality.

After catching our breath and having a careful look over the region’s map, we will find that the Zionist aggression is getting stronger… it has also found support in the mire of sectarian, doctrinal, and religious conflict we fell into… such support made the Zionist enemy stronger and allowed it to do whatever it wants, whenever it wants, however it wants fearing no Islamic or Arab reaction.

I believe we should relate what is happening to Al-Aqsa mosque to the essence upon which the Arab-Zionist conflict is based; a conflict between national liberation and racist settlement colonialism… including the intention of that colonialism to eradicate the cultural and civilization fundamental constituents of the country it occupies… since this conflict was and shall not be religious or doctrinal in any way.

Worst people

Yes… Egypt is a nation big enough not to react or stop for a moment before the insults of those who happened to be in charge or in power of any country during the current time of Arab deterioration… however, that does not mean we shall let it go one time after another for those exceeding their limits in the Palestinian authority or any other organizations… we are not defending Egypt or justifying the Egyptian policy or stances… we just want to pay those attackers’ attention to the fact that their knives are stabbing Palestine before Egypt.

I am not about to detail what Egypt had done for Palestine because there are things that cannot be measured; either materialistically or morally. Also, I am not about to talk about some of those who consider themselves leaders in the Palestinian side; either those who left our world or those still alive and whom we may call the “worst people”, for there are others more knowledgeable than me to talk about this, even from inside the Palestinians themselves.

What I am about to do is discussing several things. First, every human action is liable to discussion and evaluation. However, there is a great difference between discussion based on proper bases aiming at correcting any disorder and misbehaving and insult. Such insult would have been nothing to mention if it affected the one who did it. However, if its repercussions affect peoples’ relations and countries’ interests aiming at destroying what is left of the Arab capabilities; we can call it treason and not just a crime.

The second thing I would like to discuss is that being in charge of leading positions means that the one responsible should be very well aware of the difference between constant facts and variables and the relation between them… meaning that anyone in charge of a position shall know how to read the current situation based on a proper base of information that is not alienated from the constant facts that have and will never be changed, especially as regarding to the circumstances we are going through right now, starting from the striking terrorist wave, change in the American administration, what is happening in more than one Arab country and the implications of all this on the tactic of dealing with the Zionist state and on the political and media discourse.

The third matter is that the one in charge shall start by himself to know where exactly he stands. He shall pay attention to what he says and its effect; otherwise he should train himself to the virtue of silence if he is ignorant and does not know what he is talking about. After that, he shall read the diaries of those who preceded him and the crimes committed against Egypt by some considered to be long-time leaders in fighting the Zionist enemy and later turned into conspiring mentalities dedicated in the present time to fighting each other over domestic positions, budgets and concessions instead of fighting the real enemy. They also dedicated themselves to killing whoever stands in their way even if he was one day an ally. Some of them even attacked the Egyptian role in a time when it was led by a historic leader like Nasser…

In such regard, there is a lot to say, however Egypt was big enough to forgive the misdeeds of the young and take care of them hoping they may pay attention to fulfilling their liberating national duty. Such misdeeds were forgiven for the sake that the one who did them had once the honor of fighting and resisting the Zionist enemy. But what cannot be forgiven is that a nobody with no history of resistance attacks the Egyptian decision and decides himself what Egypt should and should not do.

The fourth issue – which is highly important in my opinion – is the misconceptions that infected the ideology of the ordinary citizen regarding the Palestinian case. Such misconceptions became difficult to overcome or ignore; the misconception that we have to go away from the Palestinian case that caused us a lot of troubles. We have to exert all efforts to set things right once again so that the citizen knows once again that he has an Arab-national identity and that the Zionist enemy occupying Palestine is an Egyptian national security matter of the first degree, and that generalization is not logical… to the end of the proper set of values that is still and will be right until Palestine is back. For all this, those who attack the Egyptian role and stances are contributing directly to increasing such misconceptions of the Egyptian citizen in specific and Arab one in general. They distract his attention from the real danger hitting the society.

The difficult dilemma

The Zionist movement tactic has been, still is and will always be, to dress the Arab-Zionist conflict in an Islamic-Jewish religious one. Despite it’s a secular movement, it worked hard to employ the religious myth in serving its targets which have never been separable from colonization in all its eras. The movement itself is an egregious and blatant example of the racist colonial occupation. In that context, it was never a coincidence that the British occupation, in its peak, worked hard to create Islamic movements that tend to call for fundamentalism – which is different form Usul ad-Din[1] and Usul al-Fiqh[2] - in order to appear as a rival for the Zionist Jewish existence in Palestine. And so came first the muslim brotherhood movement, and then the Islamic Hizb ut-Tahrir[3], and later came supplement movements like Hamas[4]; the example I mean.

I find myself in a difficult dilemma along with others who have stood firmly in side of the Palestinian cause and believed, honestly and with full awareness, it’s the national liberation struggle topping all priorities of the Arabs’ and the whole world. Not to mention it’s a matter of national security for Egyptian patriots. That’s why we have to work our minds and exert all efforts in order to find a way out of such serious dilemma. I say this after Egyptian security services have gathered evidence based on confessions obtained from the accused in the case of assassinating late Egyptian General Prosecution head, Chancellor Hesham Barakat. The evidences collected show that Hamas movement had a role in training, arming, and overseeing the assassination in addition to drafting other similar future plans. We wished Hamas officials would delay their denial which they said is outright and declare instead that they were about to examine facts and names and to interrogate who may be involved or acting behind the movement’s top leaders like Haniyeh[5], az-Zahhar[6], Abu Marzooq[7], and others, since it’s common, especially in armed movements, that you may find someone acting individually either in a heated moment of anger or may be out of ignorance, or even in a betrayal attempt to implicate the whole group in what may later destroy it. I wished Hamas would take due time to investigate the whole matter and then declare the results and reveal the mistaken in case they existed.

To give you an example of what I want to lay before you regarding having some elements acting individually in an armed movement, I recall a situation I had in 1983 while I was working as a journalist in the Emirati al-Khaleej[8] newspaper and used to have a daily column. One day, I wrote about what I called “Abu Eyad’s smoke bombs”. Salah Khalaf [9]“Abu Eyad[10]” was a top leader in Fateh[11] movement and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO)[12]. The man was responsible for the unified security and was involved in assassination operations in addition to other unlimited activities. I had a close personal relationship with him along with Hayel Abdel-Hamid[13] “Abu el-Haul[14]” and Farouq al-Qaddoumi[15] “Abu al-Lutf[16]”, while I maintained a slightly little relation with Khalil al-Wazir[17] “Abu Jihad[18]”. In that article, I leveled a bit harsh criticism at Salah Khalaf for comments he gave at that time. On morning of the publishing day, I had a phone call started by inquiring about my name to make sure it was me. When confirmed, a shower of abusive words and insults opened at my face ending by a clear threat: “I swear you #$%*!@ I will shoot you down although you are not worthy”. When I asked him about his identity, he said: “I’m your master and master of your whole country Egypt, Rasem el-Ghool[19]”. El-Ghool was one of the closest trusted people to Yasser Arafat and who was a master at killing as well. At that time, I was accused by many UAE-resident Egyptians of working for the Palestinians against my country’s interests because all my writings and stances were unlimitedly in side of the Palestinian cause and Palestinian people regardless of any mistakes committed by some of them toward their co-worker Egyptians. I was also a long-time dissident of then-president Sadat; I used to oppose his policies and those of the one who followed him. I felt deeply sorry for myself and decided to call the Palestinian ambassador in Abu Dhabi who immediately apologized and sent Mr. Rageh at-Tall, my friend, to assuage the situation. Later, el-Ghool called and a really nice conversation ran between us; when killer was justifying his murder for the intended-to-be-killed! Then, members of armed resistance movements may sometimes deviate from their assigned job, not to mention when religion constitutes a major role in forming the ideology of such group; giving it the momentum to continue recruiting members, gaining profits, and justifying all its misdeeds.

We are in a real dilemma regarding what has happened, is and will continue to happen, to the Egyptian and Arab conscience in the streets in general. When voices calling for normalization with the Zionist enemy and circles of interests connected to the Hebrew state and global capitalism find their golden chance to launch their vicious attack against any Egyptian, Arab, or even international humanitarian commitments toward the Palestinian cause as regarded a unique case of national liberation and a matter of bloody racist colonial occupation set against a whole nation. Hamas officials, along with all those who employ their religious ideologies as a means to serve their own benefits of staying in power and curtailing others’ will to liberate, are directly responsible for inciting some Egyptian and Palestinian young men to act against the Egyptian state including its land, people and political regime. They are responsible as well of digging tunnels aiming at vandalizing our economy and security with the aim of reaching to the heart of Egypt and then hit it, pushing tens and may be hundreds of Sinai and non-Sinai people to connect their livelihoods to those tunnels and what comes out of them.

Away from the legitimate question inquiring about the cost of such cemented reinforced-with-steel tunnels that may amount to hundreds of millions of dollars per tunnel and if it was more useful to allocate such money in solving problems of Gazan people, I find myself in a devastated state facing a very difficult equation to solve; that is some Palestinians are deeply involved in destroying Egypt’s national security either on the economic, security, or moral level, and with unprecedented diligence. Meantime, we find other officials in an organization, supposed to be resisting the Zionist occupation and working for the liberation of Palestine, turning a blind eye on the systematic deviation in their movement’s political and popular establishing ideology while the Palestinian people is suffering hunger, lack of shelter, and unemployment. And finally the fact that Palestine is Egypt’s direct and main gate of its national security; the fact that every Egyptian should be fully aware of and never let go of it.

It’s a real dilemma that is getting more and more difficult when adding to it the other party calling for normal ties with the Zionist state and fiercely standing against Arab nationalism and liberation. I hope we can find a way out of such dilemma. I wish Hamas would look for those who went astray among its members and to reconsider its policy that underestimates Egypt security in favor of the terrorist muslim brotherhood.

Our immune system… Egyptian patriotism ordeal

Dr. Gamal Hassan, the psychiatry medicine consultant in the UK and distinguished Egyptian novelist, has disagreed with me over the harms that hit our Egyptian immune system. I mentioned some of these harms in previous articles regarding how such extremist terrorist Cancer, called muslim brotherhood, spread through our Egyptian society.

She said: “Dear friend… let me disagree with you, despite your accuracy in describing the harms you listed before; I believe the other side of the chaos we witness these days is our resistance to survive the upheaval that is hitting the whole world due to corrupt souls of mankind on all levels. This is only the Egyptian episode of this series. Remember how Egyptians turned the June, 5 1967 defeat into perseverance in June, 9 and 10 of the same year and through the war of attrition until the great victory in October, 6 1973. Hope is born out of pain. We have hope in God. Hope exists as long as God exists, and God is eternal”. These were Dr. Gamal Hassan’s words.

I agree with her. Despite the harms that hit our Egyptian immune system, especially what affected its cultural and human existence in the core, I believe our beloved country possesses all resistance and renaissance factors.

It’s what Egyptians did throughout their history; they resisted, as deterioration and decline have hit our country throughout Egypt history; ancient, middle, modern, and contemporary. And if a general equation is to represent and predict movement of our Egyptian history, it will be a sine wave signal fluctuating between deterioration and renaissance. But, at that time, the nation was able to face these challenges and stand against such deterioration. In this article, we will continue talking about our Egyptian immune system by writing about resilience factors and our ability to start over.

What Dr. Hassan said about June, 5 defeat and what later followed when Egyptian people resisted and fought bravely until October, 6 victory was achieved, goes directly in the heart of what I said before. As there is great difference between harm caused by a sudden hit with a big club that keeps you paralyzed for a period of time, and other harm caused by cancer stealthily sneaking into your blood and bones until it takes control of all your body. The latter is a malignant disease that keeps eating your healthy cells unceasingly until it’s too late to recover. That’s why we were able to resist after the defeat; our Egyptian national immune system was still functioning well; its ability to resist and fight was represented in our ardent patriotic will. But later our ability to resist weakened because harm this time was caused by cancerous cells that spread through the Egyptian body itself; those malignant cells that took command of our country until they came to power!

Another major harm that targeted our collective immune system was the profoundly-misleading mix between reaching a solution to the Palestinian cause against the Hebrew state and colonial Zionist occupation, and destroying the geographical, historical, cultural and civilized constituents of our Egyptian patriotism. The concept behind this is that all that may contradict with such approach to deal with the Zionists has to be exterminated and is considered against free thinking and economic interests necessities governed by regional and international balance of powers. Such concept backs the Hebrew state to be the most powerful state in the region. In this way, gaining satisfaction and approval of the so-called state became the golden gate for the heart and soul, and treasury as well, of the USA.

In this context, terms of patriotism, nationalism, Arab nation, third world, and global liberation movement were mocked. Not only were these terms mocked as definitions, but as concepts as well, such concepts that played a role we may disagree about how important it was in our country’s history, but it did exist. Those who “committed” such mix went far in attacking others and even widened their circles of influence until they became in control of some media and journalistic outlets. People reacted to such diverged national stances by repulsion and so the public opinion was divided, clearing the way for the extremist terrorist religion-dressed cancer to pass through our social depth.

That worked well for the benefit of the extremist religious perspective that has no definition for homeland in its dictionary. In their opinion, their religion is homeland, Quran is the constitution; and legacy of al-Banna[1], Qutb[2], al-Mawdudi[3], al-Albani[4], Ibn Taymiyyah[5], and others are their doctrine and nothing else.

If we added to all the above-mentioned the deteriorated education system; cinema, theater, and TV drama poor works and low production; absence of popular cultural centres; and civil society communities and non-governmental organizations funded by parties aiming at dismantling Egypt and hitting its national compositions in the core, such organizations and groups that went wild and became stronger than the central state in many fields, we would realize the tragic ordeal we have now.

Challenges like foreign invasion and occupation of our country or any other Arab state, with the Palestinian cause in the heart of all this, have been great stimuli of our Egyptian will to react and resist in all battle fields. But the enemy became a friend, and then an ally, and later a master that has the right to grant and deny through the USA gate.

And so, one finds himself facing a great challenge; that is searching for our lost Egyptian immune system and inquiring how to reactivate it in order to work as usual.
