Message from Sudanese thinker Haidar Ibrahim Ali (1-2)




I received the following message from Professor Dr. Haidar Ibrahim Ali; head of the Sudanese Studies Centre. I knew the honorable man more than thirty years ago. He is a prestigious Sudanese professor and thinker. I do not exaggerate when I say that he is a human thinker whose thought and human composition exceed limits of nationalism.

Professor Dr. Haidar comments in his message or it’s better to say he gives evidence in his message for what I wrote in a previous article about Sudan. In that article, I called upon “Almasry alyoum” newspaper to hold a seminar about the Sudanese-Egyptian relations and invite Sudanese figures to this seminar. However, the editing management omitted the newspaper’s name from the article’s heading without prior permission from me. I actually thank them for such change as it’s more convenient this way since “Almasry” will not respond to the initiative and in this case, this would have been embarrassing for both parties; the writer and the publishing institution. Though, I did not pay attention to this as there are other things more important than discussing ethics of the relationship combining the publisher and the writer.

Now we come to the message I received from the Sudanese polymath Dr. Haidar Ibrahim Ali:

Dear Brother Ahmed Elgammal,
I wish you are doing fine. I also wish you a happy new year in which all your long-awaited wishes can come true. I thank you for your initiative aiming at pushing away this mode of political depression prevailing on both sides. Such thing is well seen through the bad language heard, gross discussions adopted, the inability to conduct an objective dialogue, also in giving green light for media outlets using vulgar language; the thing that contributes to messing with the awareness of the masses. Such vulgar and bullying-like discussions moved to TV studios that became more like spots for consuming drugs.

I couldn’t believe what I read in the papers and saw over the screen wondering: Have we really reached this limit of cultural and political deterioration? As I belong to that generation which has an image of Egypt in his mind totally different to what takes place on the ground or what we see and hear. As I witnessed when I was still young prior to independence the slogans chanted defining the kind of mutual relations with Egypt saying: “Long live the unity of the Nile Valley.” Such unity was perceived by some as the unity of the two peoples under the Egyptian royal regime. The Left, meanwhile, used to say: “Long lives the common struggle;” that was the struggle against occupation.

At that time, the Egyptian universities were teeming with Sudanese students. Also tens of brilliant students were dispatched in “As-Sanhouri study mission” at the end of the forties to France. Later, they came back to lead the national patriotic movement and some of them even assumed important positions in the national governments. Sudanese border guards, meanwhile, were patrolling the Egyptian borders defending their second homeland. They also made neighborhoods inside Cairo like Ain Shams and Al-Gabal Al-Asfar look like Sudanese ones. Tens of marriages between Sudanese and Egyptians took place.

During that period of time, Sudanese poets like Gaili Abdel-Rahman, Tag as-Serr al-Hassan, Muhammed al-Fitouri, Mohie ed-Din Saber, Mohie ed-Din Fares, Gemaa’ and Abdullah ash-Sheikh al-Bashir were shining stars in Egypt’s gatherings of literature people. Before them, al-Akkad encouraged novelist Mu’awiya Nour to write in As-Siyasa newspaper and he did. Also at establishing Al-Masa’a newspaper at the beginning of the sixties, Gaili Abdel-Rahman was assigned the task of supervising the culture page.

As to Sudan during that period of time, Cairo University – Khartoum branch was considered an academic, intellectual and cultural enlightening institution. Khartoum University does not forget Dr. Abdel-Aziz Ishaq who, upon coming back to Egypt, established “the African League” giving the opportunity for shining stars interested in Africa and Sudan like Muhammed Fa’eq, Abdel-Malek ‘Ouda, Helmi Sha’rawi and Botros Ghali to appear.

The best of what was written about Sudan in Arabic was written by Egyptians; atop of them is Abdel-Magied Abdeen who wrote “History of Arab culture in Sudan”, also in mid history the reference was Mustafa Musa’ad’s writings, later were Shawqi al-Gamal, Muhammed Fou’ad Shokri and Nasim Maqar, in literature were ‘Abd Badawi, Ezz ed-Din Ismail and Muhammed an-Nuwaihi. I myself have studied in the High Institute for Teachers – later the faculty of education – at the hands of Dr. Muhammed Zaki al-‘Ashmawi who introduced me to modern poetry. He used to wander in the lecture hall with his ancient roman stature reading to us in his sonorous melodic voice poems of Abdel-Mo’ati Hegazi “The way to the lady” and those of Salah Abdel-Sabour “Hanging Zahran” and plays like “Oedipus the King”.

I also studied Al-‘Arud or the study of Arabic prosody and snippets of Semitic Languages at the hands of Dr. Khalil ‘Asaker. Writings of Dr. Sa’ad Maher Hamza were of the early contributions in economy, also writings of Dr. Kamal Desouqi in socio-psychology, Salah ed-Din ash-Shami in geography, Dr. Muhammed Awad Muhammed who authored the copious reference: “Northern Sudan and its tribes,” also book of Dr. Abdel-Qader Mahmoud titled “Sufi thought in Sudan” which was the first attempt in this academic branch. We cannot forget Dr. Muhammed Mohie ed-Din ‘Awad in the branch of Law and Dr. Tolba ‘Owaida who opened his heart and Zagazig University which he established for the Sudanese when he came back to Egypt. Many of those who love Sudan specialized in authoring books about Sudan; such writings were marked by both academic impartiality and lovingness as well. Atop of them are Mr. Helmi Sha’rawi who studied in Juba University, late Mr. Youssef ash-Sherif and Mr. Ahmed Hamroush, and Mrs. Amina an-Naqqash.

We belong to a generation who knows well how blood and souls of both Egyptians and Sudanese were shed in prisons of Ibrahim Abdel-Hadi during the royal era. In such regard, Ahmed ar-Refa’i wrote in his biography titled “Distinguished Leftist” the following: “Few days after I was released, one of my companions came knocking the door exclaiming: “do you know that Salah Beshri is dead? And that today is his funeral?” I felt very sad. Salah was my colleague during my imprisonment time; the Sudanese engineering student diagnosed with Tuberculosis and who was deprived of medication in order to make him kneel and surrender,” page 128. A protest holding the corps of the Sudanese patriot swept Cairo – that was the relation between Egypt and Sudan you Ahmed Moussa and Tawfiq Okasha. The government sent his body in a military plane to be buried in his hometown Atbara in an attempt to appease the anger.

At that time, dogmatic groups like muslim brotherhood and communists used to have common membership in the two countries. For example, “HADITU” movement had decided that the communist Sudanese becomes automatically a member of the Egyptian group when he comes to Egypt and vice versa; the Egyptian member of HADITU becomes automatically member of the Sudanese communist party when he goes to Sudan.

Priority of contradictions




This time, I will not write the names of whom I believe are closely related to the purport of this article, only because I have good connections with some of them, as we have things in common in loving our country Egypt and it would be a loss to waste such things. Also because some others of those names produce no thought or vision and behave as if they are suffering from what I called before “the syndrome” that worsens and becomes acute in certain times. Deemed as patients, it wouldn’t be humane or noble to address sick people.

I have already written long before about what I’m going to write about now. It has to do with the cycles or circles of the history of nations and peoples; those connected cycles included in one context called the movement of history, or one can say they are connected cycles, with every cycle retaining its own features and ethos relatively governed by the geographical necessities; natural, demographic, political and economic necessities.

It doesn’t make sense, either logically or scientifically, to deal with the ancient history of Egypt as if it’s accidental and fruitless; such history that goes back in time to the ancient eras until about six thousand years ago when writing was used in recording history. Since being accidental means it started away from any kind of interactions with the geographical situation which our beloved Egypt lies in the middle of. Being fruitless, meanwhile, means it brought about no effects and carried no genes that were passed on to the circles or cycles accumulated later.

In my opinion, being accidental and fruitless does not make a people or history like the Egyptian people and history. In addition, feeling proud of the patriotic history, understanding and drawing lessons from it through its circles and cycles is totally different to being a chauvinist; the one who usually claims descending from a noble origin distinguished from all humans, or a fanatic who regards others in an arrogant and biased way.

For example it happened that the Roman Empire was attacked by the tribes that were called barbarians – not Berber as barbarian is the killing brutal savage. Surges of Goths, Vandals, Magyars, Germanics and Huns kept attacking the Roman Empire until Rome and the empire crumbled in September, 476. The Roman citizens thought it was the end of the world and it was Doomsday. It also happened that the area including France, Belgium and parts of Germany, western of the Rhine, were called the Roman Gaul countries.

At the end of the fifth century, the Germanic tribes – in specific, the Franks tribe; part of the Germanics – stormed the Gaul countries. The attack was led by Clovis I who changed the name Gaul to France; after the name of his tribe. He also changed the language and religious creed from the Christian Egyptian Arianism doctrine – that prevailed after Saint Ulfilas had translated the Bible according to Arius’ teachings – into Catholicism.

Moreover, the Merovingian and Carolingian dynasties descended from these barbarian invaders. Also, Charlemagne descended from the same origin; this man who changed the political history of Europe when he took the empire crown from the hands of the Pope and crowned himself. In doing so, he put an end to an entire era when the Pope was the one crowning the emperor, meaning the first has the upper hand over the second.

I can’t imagine a chauvinist Gaulist – from Gaul – idiot hosted right now by a French satellite channel, or sitting in a café in the Latin Quarter in Paris or in a seminar, and who decides to cancel the history of France before the foreigners’ invasion and keeps talking about the glory of the Eastern Goths, and before them the Romans and those who came before the Romans…etc. claiming that he is revenging for the history of his country.

Living nations and respected thinkers deal with the history of their countries as connected circles and cycles. They interpret the phenomena in light of the human, temporal and spatial circumstances that governed them, not according to their affections and what they think is the only right thing.

It’s true that the ancient Egyptians taught humanity, in the time of Dynasties, philosophy, medicine, mathematics and engineering; meaning all branches of “wisdom”. It will cause no harm to Egypt, its history and conscience if we said that Egypt benefited from the Greco-Roman eras, or from converting to Christianity and benefiting from the Christian eras… etc. until reaching to Muhammed Ali and his family, then the patriotic rule established by the great Egyptian army.

Finally, I have a word to say to my physician friend who adores the ancient history of Egypt: have mercy on yourself… don’t force others to go into an argument that we have no time to go into right now… we have contradictions with terrorism and all those claiming possessing the religious authority, the thing that makes contradiction with July 23rd revolution and Nasser a secondary one compared to them and so, it can be postponed.

Gang of subversive cultural lag




A state of hysterical piffle is increasing by this gang of subversive cultural lag whenever the impact of the June 30th revolution gets stronger and achievements on the domestic level and on the foreign circles; Arab, African, and international get more evident… as the decisive main role in all that was and will always be for the Egyptian army and the broad masses of the Egyptian people.

Such hysterical state has started since that alliance of feudalism, Capital, corruption, and British occupation in Egypt was hit by the July 23rd revolution in 1952… that revolution that came as a phase completing other long phases of the struggle of the Egyptian people in their modern and contemporary history; meaning since their revolution against the French Campaign at the end of the eighteenth century and the dawn of the nineteenth century.

It is a gang since it is a composition that cannot have the honor of being described as a division, community, or even a group as such names are given to other respectful compositions… but the gang, in its contemporary definition, best suits the criminal compositions.

Also, it is a hysterical piffle since the parties of the gang, including capitalists, owners of satellite channels, and others who “commit” the profession of writing and some of them have daily columns, are supposed to be normal beings due to their education, culture, and the nature of their work, but what they do reveals they are diagnosed with a composite psychological mental disorder.

Moreover, it is a subversive cultural lag since they make desperate efforts to stop the wheel of progress and smash it and to mess with the national conscience and rip it apart… the more intense the domestic fighting, the more hysterical they become and the more fuel they add to the fire.

They declare all the time that July 23rd revolution was and will be a heinous subversive action that killed Egypt and the Egyptians… and that the royal regime, its figures, along with the British occupation, that remained until 1954 and tried to come back to power in 1956 but failed, were all good and everything was doing great… and so, they regard all the achievements, policies, orientations, and stances related to that revolution and its figures as guilty… they even refuse to go into a reasoned discussion about it… then suddenly one finds them praising Sadat and considering him a hero and a symbol for their orientations for a clear target; that is driving a wedge in the structure of July revolution and ripping its history apart as part of ripping the national conscience.

They turn their back to the fact that Anwar Sadat was a member of the Free Officers movement… and that he was the one announcing the statement of the revolution in radio… and that he remained a serving soldier to its goals and close to Nasser until his death… and that he was his only deputy; that is why he assumed the office of presidency after him… and that he, until his death in 1981, remained proud of the July revolution and his role in it to the extent that during the parties’ experiment that started in 1976, it happened that Sadat adopted a strict stance against the enemies of July revolution and described Fouad Serag el-Din and his group with what they deserved and did not cease to throw them in jail.

It is a gang that collaborated with muslim brotherhood in embedding subversive cultural lag as both of them were part of a common cultural social economic composition that we call capitalism by mistake… such composition does not deserve such name since respected capitalism has achievements and practices that cannot be culturally lagging or subversive.

I do believe that such gang still wishes and seeks the return of muslim brotherhood as they think the European and American orientation aims at enabling the fundamentalist groups with the religious-based orientations of ruling the region for known time-consuming to explain reasons.

And so, we found one of those servants of such gang, who “commit” writing a daily column in a private newspaper that has no known cultural, ideological, or social orientation, writing and issuing final judgments, just like one diagnosed with hysterical rave, that July 23rd revolution is a crime… then he travelled to Erdogan’s Turkey to appear in the muslim brotherhood satellite channel “Mekammelien”… and after that he praises Sadat while asking the owner of the satellite channel to join him in these hysterical practices.

In my opinion, the subversive cultural lag-spreading gang will not rest or calm down unless they succeed in having a mischievous shake-up between the Egyptian people and the Egyptian army as the latter is the leader of July 1952 revolution, 1973 victory, and the June 30th revolution… furthermore, if we put aside the figures of Mohammed Naguib, Nasser, Sadat, Mubarak, and Sisi, the Egyptian army will be the one leading the national struggle… phase after phase and time after time.

I call on all normal people in our country not to take the bait offered on the hands of this gang and to reveal what parties of such gang commit against the people, army, and country… I also ask to deal with our historical course as complete connected phases with each one having its own positive and negative sides, but they still remain connecting and completing each other… Sadat and the victory of October belong to July revolution and not to that subversive cultural lag-spreading gang.

… Mowais “Sea” as well




I have noticed a demand over what is written of articles enjoying social features and detailed narration of the countryside and city life during past eras prior to the third millennium… maybe because many became thoroughly bored of following the political writings… in such regard, I receive extensive comments over the articles that enjoy such aspect… some of those comments are oral while some other are written, specially over the social media and e-mail.

I am really grateful for the dedication of Mr. Mounir Amer the distinguished journalist and great writer to express his opinions over what I write… I would be complementing myself if I mentioned some of his words that do make me feel proud and humble as well… as he always affirms the importance of writing about the Egyptian identity noticed through the behavior of the Egyptians, their ways of life, styles of thinking, slang proverbs, popular beliefs, in-between relations, and their handling of the challenges they meet whether small or big… Mr. Mounir Amer believes such articles enjoying such features are distinguished – being distinguished does not mean they are the best as scholars of fundamentals say.

In the same direction, but in his criticizing satirical way, Eng. Salah Diab cared to comment over the articles of such kind… he usually starts by a mocking sentence like the one saying “you insist of reminding us of uncomfortable days… days of fleas, mud, and back-breaking work… you mentioned the names of some rivers we call “seas” but you did not mention Mowais “Sea” in Sharkia governorate!!”.

I immediately apologized for forgetting mentioning Mowais “Sea” which is the most or one of the most important water resources in Sharkia governorate where vast areas in districts like Zagazig, Abo Kebier, Al-Ibrahimiya, Kafr Saqr, and Awlad Saqr are being irrigated through it… some say that the history of Mowais “Sea” dates back to B.C. as they claim it is the “Sea” where Moses’ mother tossed him into… some others say it was dug and deepened in the time of Mohammed Ali Pasha Alkabir who was interested in developing most of the old water channels… and so he increased the depth of some of them to eight meters deep and dug new water channels… the number of what Mohammed Ali established of water channels and drains reached 37, 14 bridges to protect the banks of the Nile from the hazards of floods, and 44 barrages to regulate water.

Mohammed Ali Pasha was the founder of the summer irrigation system, he established Al-Kanater Al-Khairiya and ordered the three main irrigation canals to be dug; al-Tawfiqi, al-Monofie, and al-Beheiri… he also founded al-Mahmoudiya water canal that was named after Sultan Mahmoud, the Pasha thought of establishing it in 1811 and started execution in 1817 to revive the agricultural land in Beheira governorate… he assigned the task of designing its digging to the French engineer Cost and it was opened in January 24th, 1820 when Mohammed Ali Pasha himself along with his son Ibrahim Pasha and his son-in-law Defterdar Watbouz Oghli attended the inauguration.

To be fair, Mohammed Ali Pasha exerted tremendous efforts in establishing and enlarging Egypt’s irrigation network… another fact that is usually goes unmentioned, it is also due to the strenuous efforts put in by Egyptian peasants to dig such network using their primitive tools; meaning axes, hand-operated jacks, and palm leaves-weaved baskets… for example a hundred thousand Egyptian peasants died while digging al-Mahmoudiya water channel alone… I would like also to mention that the website of Sharkia governorate includes an important brief about the history of the governorate and its geography including mentioning the prophets and Holy families that lived or passed through Sharkia.

I also received an e-mail from my colleague journalist and friend Atef el-Nemr whom I disagreed with him over it… he cited what Pope Shenouda said as he, Pope Shenouda, believed that the word Mosa – as spoken in Arabic – is a compound word of two syllables, the first one “Mo” means water and the second “sa” means son… like the word “Eissa[1]” as “Ei” means the upper one; meaning God and “sa” means son… and so Eissa means son of God.

Moreover, I received many praising telegraphs from many and an extra piece of information from my loyal friend Eng. Refaat Bayoumi who said that Moses was born during the nineteenth dynasty of the Ramesside time and not in the time of Hyksos as I thought… another addition I got from my friend that I will ever be indebted to; Professor Dr. Abdelhamid Safwat Ibrahim, professor of social psychology who believes that such kind of writing belongs to the category of Egyptian social history as it includes accurate detailing description narrating how the Egyptians live in a certain place and definite time era.

And so, everyone agrees on the necessity to turn these articles into a book… I was encouraged to continue writing about such kind of historical-social recounting portraying components of the Egyptian identity… I believe it is time to devote more efforts into more profound rooting that will remain… it looks like as if the saying attributed to Imam Mohammed Abdo was right… that which says “may God damn all that has to do with politics”.

Let us catch our breath




I know that humans are more important than rocks as stated in God’s doctrine… that is what we were told in the Holy Quran: “They ask you about the sacred month - about fighting therein. Say, "Fighting therein is great [sin], but averting [people] from the way of Allah and disbelief in Him and [preventing access to] al-Masjid al-Haram and the expulsion of its people therefrom are greater [evil] in the sight of Allah. And fitnah is greater than killing“, verse 217 of al-Baqara Chapter.

Therefore, I am one of those who believe that the Zionist crime taking place right now in threatening Al-Aqsa mosque, changing its nature, or working to knock it down is not only targeted at Al-Aqsa mosque… in my opinion, thinking in this way helps the Zionists complete their full crime against the Palestinian people and against all the human legacy opposing racism, aggression, and occupation.

Now, one definitely wonders: why has the Zionist state taken this step of targeting Al-Aqsa mosque in this timing in specific when the public image of currents of political Islam started to fade and falsehood of their ideology unfolded… including those who claimed to represent enlightened political Islam… also when an international, regional, and Arab cooperation began to stand against the Islamist terrorism and fight it as we see right now?

Why in this timing in specific has the Zionist state fueled this issue in particular that leads to reviving the Islamist argument saying that Al-Aqsa mosque – first Qibla to which Muslims used to turn at prayers, second holiest mosque, and place where Prophet Muhammed, peace be upon him, set off on his Night Journey of Isra and Mi’raj – is in danger?

I believe the answer is clear… we can start by saying that the Zionist state was not away from the establishment and reinforcing of that current so that the Arab nation and countries can fall into the mire of sectarian, doctrinal, and religious strife or Fitna… such a gloomy and deep mire where nations and peoples before fell into and kept fighting for hundreds of years until they wasted their energy and squandered their resources as known from history.

We can also relate this to what those Islamist terrorist groups became after the strikes they received in Egypt on the hands of the Egyptian army and police and due to the vigilance of its people… or in other Arab countries that stood alone or through international coalitions against this terrorism… and so a rescue scheme had to be drawn up for those groups so that they can remarket their ideology once again under the pretext saying: stop targeting the Islamic groups and go fight the Zionist state that does what it does to the holy Aqsa.

The answer could also be that the Zionist state means to embarrass Egypt in specific and put its regime and government in a difficult situation as what would be said and publicized for politically and in media is that the regime in Egypt has to take a decisive practical stance against the Israeli actions and must not just condemn them or call for restraint… and of course this practical stance requires giving the chance for the terrorist groups in Sinai to do what they can against the Zionist state… and that the Egyptian government should not only postpone any disagreement with the Islamist group Hamas, but also support it in every possible way including supplying it with arms so that it can take action against the Zionists and, in doing so, reduce the pressure over Al-Aqsa mosque.

There could be other more accurate interpretations than what I go for… but what I want to say here is that we – as civil powers in the Egyptian street in specific and the Arab one in general – should once again handle the conflict as it should be; a conflict between the right of independence and liberation against aggression and occupation… a conflict between the will of people seeking development and welfare and rejecting violence and war… against an aggressive colonial racist settlement movement which managed through aggression to occupy lands that do not belong to it and to seek support from its international colonial back in order to practice more aggression and keep flouting the humanitarian norms, international laws, and tens of resolutions of the United Nations (UN) and international organizations.

We have to catch our breath after being exhausted in engaging with political Islam currents and terrorist criminals… we were also consumed out of discussing issues it is time now to put an end to and take lessons from… atop of these issues is the political movement in Egypt since the 1919 revolution to July, 1952 revolution… and from July, 1952 to January, 2011 revolution… as going into arguments over disputed matters will do no good and will only increase the gap between constituents of the Egyptian mentality.

After catching our breath and having a careful look over the region’s map, we will find that the Zionist aggression is getting stronger… it has also found support in the mire of sectarian, doctrinal, and religious conflict we fell into… such support made the Zionist enemy stronger and allowed it to do whatever it wants, whenever it wants, however it wants fearing no Islamic or Arab reaction.

I believe we should relate what is happening to Al-Aqsa mosque to the essence upon which the Arab-Zionist conflict is based; a conflict between national liberation and racist settlement colonialism… including the intention of that colonialism to eradicate the cultural and civilization fundamental constituents of the country it occupies… since this conflict was and shall not be religious or doctrinal in any way.

Grocery business… and history




We were taught that history does not recognize the hypothesis asking “what if…”, not because our folks used to say that “’what if…’ opens the door for bad things”, but because history is a branch of science that deals with already-complete facts or at least a phase of those facts is… and so it goes on discussing the pre-symptoms of such facts, its courses, and results according to certain research disciplines that became a well-established science… in such regard, studying history is different to studying other social sciences that accept hypotheses and scenarios, discuss them, and assess their probabilities.

We were also taught that there is a difference between calculations of commercial projects including retail, half-wholesale, and wholesale business and history calculations, since in the first case, gains, and losses as well, are measured by the criterion of increasing the materialistic revenue; meaning how much money we earned… reputation and commercial name have also their value…etc…

As to the gains in history calculations, they go to what is mostly abstract including invaluable issues… here, the one who adopts the discipline based on retail or wholesale calculations of grocery shops does not understand the meaning when nations sacrifice thousands of martyrs… when they put all their resources and potentials in resisting a foreign assault… in such case, those people who deal as per retail and wholesale calculations prefer the rule saying: if you get raped by whom you cannot resist, then enjoy!!... Since, according to their own opinion and calculations, your gain in enjoying is definitely better than losing your life if you insisted on resisting.

If we opened the door for the calculations based on the hypothesis asking “what if…”, it would apply to all questions inhabiting the human mind, starting from the moment of the first scene of creation to ask: “what if” God did not want to be known and did not create humans to know him?... “what if” God listened to the angels’ opinion regarding letting man inheriting earth when they asked inquiring and exclaiming: will you place on earth one who spreads corruption therein and sheds blood?... some may find that they; the angels, were right after corruption and blood shedding became everywhere.

And you too, dear reader, can go on asking using the “what if…” form and making calculations according to retail and wholesale business concept supporting your opinion by numbers.

In such regard, I remember a debate I was participating in more than ten years ago in one of the famous satellite channels about what is left of July, 1952 revolution. The other party was physician Dr. Mahmoud Game’a. During the debate, one of the viewers called – his name was Sami al-Nesf, a Kuwaiti businessman – and started his comment by criticizing me saying: this Arab-national Nasserist has a hollow loud voice just like his leader Nasser who committed the biggest crime in Egypt history; that was the nationalization of Suez Canal and what followed later of war, devastation, destroying the Egyptian people capabilities, and getting the region into an era of faking people’s conceptions with Arab-nationalism, liberation…etc. He added that Britain was going to leave the Canal in 1968 without war.

I replied to him saying that he is ill-bred since he started his comment by insult, and then said that the last people who should criticize Nasser are the Kuwaitis since it was Nasser who lied behind postponing Kuwait invasion for more than thirty years when he stood fiercely against Abdel-Karim Qassem’s attempt to add Kuwait to Iraq by force. I went wondering about who would guarantee that Britain was going to leave the Canal in 1968 as there is a clear evidence that Britain does not respect agreements, especially what have to do with water channels; that is Britain is still occupying Gibraltar until now despite the fact that the agreement Britain signed regarding the Suez Canal is the same one that has to do with Gibraltar!!

Back to the “what if…” question in history, one can find that if we took this question as an established rule in reading the history facts, then everyone who opposes a certain fact or era would have the right to consider himself absolutely right… for example, and not exclusively, there are some asking “what if” the Arabs did not succeed in invading Egypt and Egypt stayed a Byzantine state, and its historical root became the Greek-Roman and later the Christian one, wouldn’t it have been better for Egypt to be like any society who enjoys the same roots in its culture in the broad meaning of the word that include human behavior, way of thinking, literature, arts…etc… and that it is better than what the Arab-Islamic roots brought to us?

Moreover, those who wonder “what if” Nasser and July, 1952 have killed all who belonged to the class of big capitalists and land owners and all their off-spring mercilessly and not only nationalize all their assets and money, would have the right in their belief that that was the best thing to do since, as proved later, such class contributed to the corruption that hit Egypt during the era of unbridled Infitah and stood in the way of Egypt to achieve a real civilized renaissance. They actually distorted the concept of capitalism itself, and some of them did not even hesitate to deal with the Zionist enemy considering this a different point of view as they do not consider the Zionists enemies in the first place… they do not consider occupying Palestine, racism or anything that has to do with Zionism wrong.

We may continue talking later about the difference between retail business and history.

About drama and history




Those who work in the research field in history and other humanitarian sciences know the difference between sources and references as they depend on both of them in getting their scientific material… also, there is no absolute acknowledgment of what any of them may contain but actually both are subject to scrutiny, criticism and comparison.

The source can be a spoken account given by one of those who took part in the events or was an eye-witness… it could also be a journalistic material published to cover or comment over the event when it happened… furthermore, it can be an official document issued from an institutional entity… moreover, it can be personal journals for one of the decision makers or someone in connection with them… etc. All those are subject to internal and external criticism and to other rules of scientific research disciplines.

As to references, these are the researches and studies that tackled what happened with study, analysis, detecting contexts and surroundings, reading results and drawing conclusions… references, in turn, are subject to criticism and one cannot take what they contain as if it is the absolute truth.

Usually the one interested in studying a phenomenon or a time period is advised to read the reference starting from its title then directly its index and the list of its sources and references… if it was discovered that that reference is not well-structured in its research; meaning in its chronological order, thematic unity, or both… and it was clear that this reference mixed between what should be mentioned in the core of the research and what should have been listed in the drafts and indices… and that it adopted an obvious outrageous bias towards a certain opinion or even towards the givens of its point in an attempt to get around the scientific material with the aim of proving what the author wants regardless of the reliability or veracity of such opinion… further, it turned out that this reference depended on sources that are not of the first degree and on other references that are questionable regarding their relative objectivity… then, that reference is not credible to rely on.

Here at this point in specific, comes the fault in drama in general and in historic drama in particular… as a certain director may say that he depended on tens of references to get his material for his drama work without knowing that it is not about the number of references he referred to… and not about how much they weigh in kilograms; meaning the number of papers… but actually it is about whether those references are credible according to the standards we mentioned some of them above.

It is really strange that some of those sources are still alive and one can have their spoken account and ask them to provide what can prove the veracity of such account… and after this subjecting this account of that source to internal criticism to see how well-connected and consistent it is with the sequence of events… and before all this, how mentally and psychologically-fit this source is as he/she may be too old and is suffering from oblivion or Alzheimer… and perhaps he/she is trying on purpose to hide parts of the truth of what happened… after this, if we apply external criticism by comparing this account with other ones and by verifying the authenticity of the documents this source is providing… then this source becomes even more important than some references.

Dear reader… you can imagine a researcher who is already known to have chosen a certain topic in order to belittle those who participated in it… and to prove for himself and for those who encouraged him the veracity of the hypotheses he made, the sayings he promotes, the allegations he gives or the lies he wants to wrap in a dress of truth… also, one finds this researcher disclaiming the efforts he received from the one who supervised his research and tried to guide him as possible… that supervisor who tried to adjust the researcher’s distorted research discipline and what he got is that his researcher student abstained from acknowledging him – like what happened with that one whom they had as an auditor for a controversial TV series – when he published his research… that his professor disowned him in public… can a researcher with such description, either on the academic or moral levels, be trusted?

Criticism in research disciplines is similar to the knowledge branch of studying Islamic Hadith… I here mean al-Jarh wa al-Ta’dil or discrediting and accrediting… which in turn is associated to what is called Ilm ar-Regal or science of narration or biographical evaluation… as it was not enough to attribute the account or opinion to X of prophet Muhammed’s companions… but there was a whole scrutinizing search done over this narrator… meaning whether he existed or not… and how mentally, morally and behavior-wise fit this narrator was… and if he is trusted or not.

I believe many of those who are supposed to belong to the field of research, post graduate studies and teaching professions in university should be subjected to evaluation starting from their fluency not in the foreign languages related to their researches but in their Arabic language; meaning their mother tongue as some of them who became even university professors cannot speak a single correct Arabic sentence.

If someone had the chance to attend the discussion of a PhD or master’s degree, he would be appalled by the crimes committed against Arabic language… so one can imagine who things are when the references and sources are written in English or French especially if the research deals with an era or subject that definitely has documents or periodicals related to it in English or French.

Some will say they can seek the help of translators… this is possible… but the problem is that the translator is usually not aware of the whole image of the subject related to the document… and so, he produces an automatic translation empty of any perception of the context and what lies beyond words.

In my opinion, the relation between art works of series and films, and historic events will stay complicated and a matter of dispute… especially if those art works are connected to the current political events and go in the heart of the running conflict in the society, region and world.
