Journey in open nature: the final

That was in the northwest of the U.S. where a police station lying on the borders between Canada and the U.S. was receiving those coming from Canada. My wife and I had a valid visa for entering along with a bunch of Canadian citizens. A while after dawn, we submitted our passports and were asked some questions like: Do you have a cigar? I answered: Yes. Again they asked: where it was made and how many one do you have? Then I realized the deep trouble I got myself into as I was told to strip the cigar of its brand label for it was Cuban cigar and there was an embargo on Cuban goods. I promised to do so but I forgot until I was hit by the question, so I said half the truth. I mentioned the number but claimed that I forgot where it was made and asked to go back to the car to check about this. At the car– like one committing a crime –I removed the label off the cigar then threw it in my mouth, chewed it well then spat it. I came back to them saying: Here is the cigar and it’s Egyptian-made!!

We waited for a relatively long time until they let us in to Washington State then, as I said before, we set off on our way to Mexico passing by the States of Montana, Idaho, Utah, Nevada, Arizona and California. Before setting out on this trip, I had already finished re-reading the first volume of the book titled “The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire” written by Edward Gibbon which I believe is a very important book.

After setting off through the vast American mid-west where not a single human is seen for hundreds of kilometers, I thought about when and how the contemporary American empire can decline and fall. Therefore, I tried to pay my attention to many things I saw and heard throughout the 25-day-long journey during which we stopped many times for fueling, eating, drinking, using bathrooms and sleeping in motels spreading on the high-ways. In some of those motels the room was directly looking over the road, and so the customer must close the door well and never open it until he’s sure of the identity of the one knocking. As to the public W.C.s on the high-ways, most of them are too horrible to use and I will not go on describing them!

As I will finish the episodes of our journey in open nature by the end of this article hoping to continue later, I will tell you about what I think are impressions indicating collapse and deterioration. First of them is the lack of feeling safe, as despite the U.S. is the greatest power worldwide now, and perhaps the greatest ever known by humanity throughout history, the individual citizen, family and also groups, all of them have feelings of fear and insecurity. This explains to me the insistence on having a license to carry a firearm and use it in many cases, as you can shoot, hit and kill anyone getting close to your land or house, and also because you are always advised, in case someone wants to snatch your bag or steal what you have, not to play courageous or resist, rather give him what you have. Here the ugly popular saying stating that “If you’re gonna be raped no way… then don’t resist and enjoy” emerged!! Probably it’s directed to women.

I saw with my own eyes a robbery which I was about to lose my life in, as we were in a fish restaurant near Washington D.C. Next to the restaurant was a crowded car park. After finishing our fish meal, we went out to the car and waited for those late in the bathroom when a black Cadillac of the very long model– having six doors –stopped and an African American driver stepped out of it. He left it running, closed it well and headed to the restaurant. In seconds, a man jumped off a pick-up car holding a metal bar looking like a saw metal part. Quickly, he pushed it near the window glass and passed it alongside the car door that opened, then he drove it and fled. The driver, meanwhile, came yelling and screaming: My car… my car. Like a foolish coming from the south, I got my hand out of my pocket and pointed towards the pick-up speaking to the man in English saying: This is the car. Suddenly, several gunshots were fired towards us– me in specific –when someone grabbed me forcibly to get me down pushing me beneath the nearest parking car. The pick-up fled away, the situation came to an end and I was rebuked: “Are you crazy?... what do you think you were doing?!!”

After fear comes ignorance, as one may receive a question– like I did –asking: where do you come from? I said Egypt. Then the elegant gentleman asking demonstrated his “knowledge” saying: “Ooh… Egypt… the Far East”!! I tried to tell him about Africa, the Pyramids, the Sphinx… but in vain. When I told him that I come from “British Columbia”, the “enlightened” man said: “Ooh… Latin America”…etc. Also, some of the Americans almost know nothing about Roosevelt, Truman or Mao Zedong. There is an unbelievable level of ignorance in the country that has the greatest contemporary library and state-of-the-art revolution of information and communication technology.

Here comes the turn of poverty or more specific neediness, as while we were having breakfast in a hotel in San Diego city and the TV was broadcasting footage of violence, war and death in Iraq, there was an American family in the restaurant bidding farewell to its 20-year-old son joining the Marines and going to Iraq. The son got married recently, for the financial reward given to the married is much more that of the single. Outside the restaurant, there were some who got discharged from the Marines’ service standing at cross-roads lifting signs searching for jobs and asking for help. Some others, meantime, were looking for food in garbage bins. Moreover, there in the huge cemetery of martyrs of American army men one can find graves written on its headstones that the deceased martyred in one of the two World Wars or in Vietnam when he was in his thirties. Other gravestones state that the late was 21 and martyred after the year 2000!!

In addition, you hear about American citizens keeping a paper in their pockets saying that in case there was an emergency to get admitted to a hospital, it’s better to leave them until they die outside it so that their folks do not incur the high expenses of their medical care. That means they go to die in wars for the money, and they also suffer from hunger and sickness because of neediness or poverty.

Now we come to addiction to gambling or poker, as the American spends his daytime in work then he spends what he earns in poker machines in the evening where a medal key holding his credit card hangs from his trousers to a slot in the machine that directly withdraws money from his bank account. They also put food and beverage within his hand reach so that he can keep playing and not get distracted away from the machine. When a machine beeps declaring that someone won, others hope to hear the same beep coming out from their slots, and so they remain “tied” to them.

Finally, we come to obesity and over-weightiness as it is said that rates of legs’ amputation due to diabetes which in turn is a result of unhealthy diet are very high in the U.S. to the extent that airliners think of changing the chairs’ capacity!

After all this, I asked myself: could fear, ignorance, neediness, addiction to poker and obesity be the weevils infesting the body of the American empire and are they symptoms for the decline and fall like what happened before in past empires? However I realized that it’s still too early since the U.S. possesses vast capabilities and natural resources and unlimitedly diverse weather. I hope there will be another chance to talk about the open nature.

Heikal and “The Ugly American”, 1961

That was in February, 1961… meaning almost 55 years and 9 months ago… I thought it would be objective if I excerpted lengthy texts of what was written then… although I realize that history does not repeat itself, and that time is like rivers; you cannot use the same water twice because it runs continuously, the resemblance between the two eras is clear… I also believe that the learned lesson from this historical context is that the Americans do not learn or make use of their accumulated experiences… because until this very moment they are still asking us the same daft question; “why do you hate us?”... it seems they are bathing in a waterless river.

I read, maybe for the third time, texts of articles written by Mr. Muhammed Hassanien Heikal – may he rest in peace. I keep revising what he wrote and which was then related to the events, maybe due to my academic study of history and my profession as a journalist. I found an article titled “The Ugly American and the actual American policy as we saw it this week”. The article was written by Mr. Heikal on February 24th, 1961 and published in the second part of the series issued by Al Ahram centre for publication.

Heikal starts his article saying: “as if I am reading once again the story of “The Ugly American” that was the most popular publication in the last three years… the story was written by two American diplomats; William Lederer and Eugene Burdick, in which they depicted some features of the American policy in Asia and Africa… they expressed through the scenes and situations of their story that strange mix of “silliness” and “ribaldry” in this policy… these are not my words; it is what the two authors of the story said in narrating the experiences they lived serving in the American diplomacy”.

Heikal continues: “this week in Cairo – February 1961 – I felt, like I said before, as if I am rereading the story of The Ugly American… this time, it was not written on paper or portrayed in a play scene or over movie screen… actually, it was a living picture in reality that combines that strange mix in the American policy, like it was once illustrated in the novel; a mix of “silliness” and “ribaldry”… I do not like these descriptions implied by the two words, as they may indicate a sense of offence, but I have to stick to the credibility of translating from “The Ugly American”.

Afterwards, Heikal goes on in his article talking about a question directed by an American official to one of the Egyptian diplomats working in the embassy of the United Arab Republic – Egypt – in Washington at that time. The question was about Egypt voting for 15 times in the United Nations agreeing to the Soviet Union stances. Mr. Heikal mentioned some of the situations when that voting of same opinions took place, including: a motion for decolonization, voting over the membership of the People’s Republic of China in the United Nations, a motion submitted by Ghana over the Congo crisis, voting over a complaint submitted by Cuba against the USA, a motion to release Lumumba and disarm Mobutu’s soldiers, voting over a motion to grant Algeria its independence, a motion to convict Belgium of its attack over Congo…etc.

Then, Mr. Heikal goes into narrating an experience he had when he found himself part of a discussion with a famous American journalist whom he met in Casablanca. The American journalist stirred many issues starting with Egypt being ungrateful to America’s favor of unveiling Israel’s attempt to obtain an atomic bomb. Mr. Heikal answered: “do you want to know the truth or you will get mad?”. The American answered: “I’m all ears”.

Heikal: “there was nothing secret to us regarding Israel nuclear activities… we were following its attempts… and I want you to know that Israel to us is a matter of life or death, and we are keeping our eyes open on it all the time… moreover, I can even tell you that we have photos and outlines in Cairo for that new atomic reactor Israel is trying to build in Naqab… as to the attack over you, there is a simple explanation for that; that is we believe, and this is actually the truth, that Israel capacity depends mainly on your generosity… without this generosity, Israel cannot survive”.

Heikal continues disclosing for the American journalist the secret lying behind America revealing the Israeli atomic activity, saying: “American secret services have arrested an American atomic energy scientist of Jewish origins while he was handing secret documents of the American atomic researches to one of the Israeli embassy men. This is the reason behind all this fuss and public declaration…”. Mr. Heikal continues: “surprisingly, two days ago – February, 1961 – I received a message sent to me from Washington from that American journalist containing only one sentence: “I’m not mad”.

Mr. Heikal ends his article – which he wrote 55 years ago – writing: “as if I was reading the novel of “The Ugly American” while I am listening to and keeping an eye on some conducts of the American embassy men in Cairo. One of them is a minister plenipotentiary named Francis Allan. He does not like this country; Egypt, or what is going on in it, and he does not keep his opinions for himself, actually, he goes saying them everywhere because he, according to his words, is an experienced expert of Egypt and Egyptians since he was working as an archeologist in Harvard University’ excavation trips near the pyramid in the pre-July 23rd revolution era in Egypt.

In his opinion, Egypt witnessed no revolution because the Egyptian peasant, according to his own estimation, does not repel, and that actually, he succumbs to his fate, accepts poverty and humiliation and does not seek to change his destiny, again, because he – the American diplomat – believes the Egyptian is dull and incapable of taking actions… and that all projects of industrialization in Egypt according to the American diplomat’s opinion are merely fancy dreams… even the High Dam is nothing but a modern-type pyramid built by the ruler to be a memorial to him… and that the Egyptian people love America and adore Britain but only their rulers are the ones opposing America and Britain’s policy due to feeling inferior to them… nothing more or less.

“No one would have blamed the American minister plenipotentiary Francis Allan if he wrote this opinion in his reports for the American government. In any case, what he writes or read by his government is incapable of changing history. However, he is definitely blamed for forgetting that he is in Cairo right now, thinking he is still lost among the excavations in the royal epoch, and not paying attention to the fact that time has changed”, Heikal wrote.

Mr. Heikal then writes about another American: “another one of them, the one who was caught distributing inciting leaflets early in the morning at the cornice. He found nothing to defend himself but to say that air blew and so the leaflets flew out of his car window to the street… also, the military attaché in the American embassy in Cairo who went talking in one of the parties this week – February, 1961 – about the protests that surrounded the embassy and kept shouting against the American policies that were involved in Patrice Lumumba’s death. The military attaché said that some of his men were equipped with Tommy Guns inside the embassy, and that orders for them to fire at the protesters were ready in case they stormed into the embassy. I do not know what would have happened if a single shot was fired from the American embassy. Most probably, the military attaché himself does not know what would have happened… these are live depiction of “The Ugly American” novel and true description of its characters… and then they become angry when we tell them this”.

Excerption from Mr. Heikal’s article ends… Now, we can only say, the more things change, the more they stay the same.

Nasser – Kennedy… model for Egyptian-American ties

Some lied and even believed their own lie… they spread it and made it an inarguable truth and didn’t pay attention to… first, they are liars… second, they deceived people and misled them; meaning they spread false news in the society… and third, they caused harm to both nation and history as well!

The lie is that post-July 23rd, 1952 revolution Egypt and the person of Gamal Abdel-Nasser was the cause of animosity towards the United States of America and the West in general… and that the July, 1952 revolution and Nasserism had “phobia” of Americans… to the rest of the lie propagated by those liars… enemies of the July, 1952 revolution and Nasser… Those enemies have existed since the first law of agricultural reform came to eminence on September, 1952 and they extend in space from private-owned villages and counties to fenced resorts… adding also saloons of those pretending to be aristocrats and bragging liberals!

The lie is proved null by documents, facts and events… Egypt has never – nor in the time of the July, 1952 revolution or later when ruled by Nasser – been behind the cross-Atlantic stances opposing the independence of the Egyptian will… because history tells us that the Egyptian delegation which went to the Paris Peace Conference on 1919 following World War I to demand independence for Egypt – as per American president Wilson’s principles – found no answer… both from Europe and America.

I have received a book, through my decent friend engineer Abdel-Hakim Gamal Abdel-Nasser tilted “The historic letters between Kennedy and Nasser” translated to Arabic by Dr. Anis Morsi… The book is a PhD. Thesis in the department of history at Melbourne University in Australia, presented by the diplomat, politician and British thinker William Yates, law graduate of Oxford University on 1947, holder of Education certificate on 1975 from Melbourne University, ex-MP of the House of Commons of the United Kingdom on 1955, ex-member of the Australian Federal Parliament from 1975 to 1980, member of many parliamentary committees in Britain and Australia, ex-officer in the British army and ex-governor of the Australian island of Christmas… he had already met with president Nasser and discussed many issues with him several times.

The PhD. thesis tackles the first days of the Cold War in the middle east since the year 1947 and until president Kennedy was assassinated on November, 1963… and the international problems and wars that followed the establishment of the state of Israel and the eminence of the Arab Nationalism after the July 23rd, 1952 revolution… the thesis also tackles the policy of president Truman and retract in president Eisenhower’s political belief… then change in the American policy in the era of president Kennedy and his initiative to solve the Arab-Palestinian conflict.

Before going deeper into the main purpose of these lines; that is the dimensions of the distinguished relation between Nasser and John F. Kennedy as a model for the Egyptian-American relationship… I stand long before what the writer of the book called “role of characters in the international crises”… we find three names for three Jewish and Zionist characters who had horrible effect on the policies of the United States and orientations of American presidents; Truman, Eisenhower and Kennedy…

First character is Edward Jacobson or Eddie…

Known in political circles as “Eddie”… he had five brothers and sisters… of Jewish origin from Lithuania… he used to live in New York but moved to Kansas City at the age of 14 to work in his father’s shop but later became an important businessman in the textile industry… when he was in the American army, he served along with Harry S. Truman late in the year of 1917… a friendship started between them that later developed into a business partnership after Truman sold the cattle and agricultural machinery in his family’s farm for 15 thousands USD… and together they launched a commercial shop in the city of Kansas in Missouri state… they named the shop Truman-Jacobson… Business flourished at first but later on 1922, they met big financial difficulties and were burdened with debts and partnership between them ended but friendship did not.

Jacobson’s effect over Truman in the early 1948 is a clear example how persons can affect officials to change the international policy as Jacobson convinced president Truman to change his policy regarding Palestine…

Margret; president Truman’s daughter, wrote about her father’s life saying: “I don’t think my father has discussed with Jacobson about politics except in superficial, simple and spontaneous occasions… but reports have proved that whenever Truman goes to Kansas, they used to meet their friends there and eat together… and whatever said by authorities about Eddie Jacobson, he was close to Zionist organizations.. and to the White House and its staff as well… especially, in the critical time when the United Nations was demonstrating the issue of dividing Palestine and establishing a national state for the Jews”.

When the USA intention to postpone the division resolution came to light, Israel has pressed on Jacobson to interfere and convince Truman to meet Chaim Weizmann; president of the international Zionist Organization… knowing that Truman had always refused to meet him or any other who is pro-Jews… he had already refused to meet him on February, 1948 but later succeeded in meeting Truman in the next month in March, 1948… and a secret meeting was scheduled between them on March 18, 1948... I have already mentioned such meeting before to prove that some people can affect the international policies… such meeting had already resulted in the USA full support for Israel and its protection… and so, we can say that Jacobson had helped establish the state of Israel.

Second character is Goda Naditch…

He used to work in the American army on 1942 as a cleric who served in North Ireland, Britain and France… his central station was in Europe as a counselor for army clerics regarding the Jewish religion… later, he was called by General Eisenhower to work as his advisor for the Jewish religious affairs… his work was focused on the problems of Jews fleeing Europe… when he was first recruited, he was commissioned to 300 days work… but later stayed in this position until the war ended.

Naditch was working on refugees… Jews in particular… and on affecting the Commander in Chief of the American armies; General Eisenhower… and so, all Europe became interested in refugees, especially the Jews who suffered the poison gas chambers…

Here, there was no doubt regarding Naditch effect over Eisenhower… the thing which made him take care of refugees in Europe, especially Jews… he also paid a visit to the camp of the Jewish refugees situated next to Munich on September 17, 1945 and said to them: “I’m very happy to visit this camp, especially on this religious occasion (Yom Kippur)… you are here temporarily and you should be patient because you will go to the places you want”… the administration of the camp and the Zionist organization had prepared a memo known as Eisenhower’s memo asking him to open immigration to Palestine and to establish a Jewish state…

Three days later after this visit, Eisenhower issued a memorandum to the United Nations titled “the United Nations and situation of refugees and those who belong to them”… this memorandum included Naditch’s recommendations to his superiors including Eisenhower… the memorandum also contained recommendations to give priority for the Jewish refugees in jobs than to Germans… and to provide them with provisions and food and give vegetables to the refugees’ camps including Jews…

Eisenhower confesses that he, along with his brothers, had been brought up on the commandments of the Old Testament… and it’s said that he used to say: “I was raised up believing that Jews are the chosen people and that they gave us principles, manners and civilization… and Jews shall know they will find no friend more loyal to them then me”… when Jews heard this in the camp of refugees, they believed they can go wherever they want… and the first place was Palestine… and because they were so many… and they knew that will stir anger among Arabs for Europe wanted to repay them as an admission of guilt… and knowing that they give what they don’t own to those who don’t deserve… the government of Palestine under the British Mandate had decided to establish a camp for them in Cyprus to host the huge number of Jewish refugees…

Third character is Abraham Feinberg…

Abraham or “Abe” was a rich man who got his fortune from selling clothes and formal costumes… he worked in different business until he got the commercial proxy of Cocacola in Israel on 1947…

Feinberg has played an important role in the international policy during the presidency of Kennedy after he helped president Harry S. Truman in his presidential elections’ campaign for the Democratic Party on 1948… especially when the campaign was struck be financial crisis and was in bad need of cash support to continue… so, Feinberg saved the situation by donating 60,000 USD to the party… and indeed, the party had succeeded in his presidential campaign… the thing that made Truman send a 7-page thanking letter to Feinberg…

Feinberg was not only a supporter of the Democratic Party presidential campaign, but also a president for Support Israel Organization… he believed that Israel should have a nuclear weapon… and so, he worked hard to collect the money needed to build the Nuclear Reactor in Dimona… Israel couldn’t provide the money from the USA aids using common ways… and so, Feinberg worked on collecting the money needed for this project… then-Israeli minister of defense, Shimon Peres, then declared that Dimona nuclear reactor costed Israel not a single cent and that it was funded by Jewish millionaires interested in that project… then-Israeli PM, David Ben-Gurion and his finance minister, Shimon Peres have participated in not hiding the matter of Dimona nuclear reactor and its industrial capabilities to produce nuclear weapons... Feinberg was alos an important member in raising funds for the presidential elections' campaign of president Kennedy on 1960... and as a result, he had an influence on Kennedy.

Feinberg’s task to hide the secret of Dimona was easy for he was in connection with Myer Feldman who was appointed by Kennedy as his advisor for the Jewish affairs and Israel after he was his assistant in the presidential elections’ campaign… despite he hadn’t concealed his sympathy with Israel, he was acquainted with the White House letters to the middle east… and such thing caused embarrassment for McGeorge Bundy; Kennedy’s advisor for National Security.

Communications between Feinberg and Feldman and then-Israel PM David Ben-Gurion and his defense minister Shimon Peres extended for a long time… Feinberg said about Peres that “whenever he meets me and asks for help… I give him”… Feinberg was also proud of supporting Israel and its secret weapons… despite that the White House administration and Kennedy in person tried not to let Israel or Egypt manufacture nuclear weapons, Dimona was working in total secrecy under the nose of the American administration and with American funds collected by Feinberg… non-proliferation of nuclear weapons was a priority of Kennedy’s policy and that was the reason behind dispatching McCloy to the middle east as told by Hermann Eilts when I met him.

As I said in the first part of the research, Kennedy was upset when he knew about it… he wanted to sent inspection teams but Feinberg opposed such thing… and when Kennedy insisted, Feinberg was worried and he once declared “Kennedy insistence on inspection left no choice to Israel and it was my duty to tell them – meaning Israel – about his insistence… my mission was difficult and included some kind of deceiving”… I have fought the most violent battle in my life to prevent Kennedy from surveying a full inspection… and I even interfered personally more than once after I was told by Feldman about what was going in the While House…

Letters exchanged between Nasser and Kennedy in the time from 1961 to 1963 reached 24 letters dated as follows… from Nasser to Kennedy on February 20, 1961… Kennedy’s reply on March 1, 1961… fourteen letters on 1961… two letters on 1962; October 22, 1962 and October 31, 1962… then eight letters on 1963…

All letters clearly reveal that there was no total match between the stances of the United Arab Republic and those of the USA… but mutual regard and respect reveal that a small state from the third world, recently got rid of a foreign British occupation that lasted for 70 years, was able to win the respect of the biggest and strongest state in the modern world; that is the USA that won the World War II.

I apologize for not being able to publish all the letters… not even full two letters between the two men for the space is limited, but I will excerpt some paragraphs that denote the mutual respect between the two leaders.

In his letter dated on May 11, 1961… John F. Kennedy wrote: “… regarding the relations between the United Arab Republic and the United States, I admit that our points of view over key matters are not always the same… in the same time however, I feel delighted because relations between us are still running in many fields in a way that is beneficial for both sides… and because the aids provided by the USA in certain amounts and for a certain purpose have played an important role in the renaissance and development program which you put down accurately…….

You know I have already appealed to the Congress to approve on the USA participation in preserving the antiquities of Nuba… and that we still welcome hundreds of students coming from the United Arab Republic who have submitted to American institutes to continue their studies and education… ambassador Reinhart have told me during his late discussions in Washington about the great program set by the United Arab Republic to establish an industrial base that guarantees achieving well-fare and raising standards of living for all your citizens…I’m especially delighted for we could manage, in many times and in adequate circumstances, to provide the selling of big quantities of wheat and other stuff to the United Arab Republic for we believe in the importance that once the people could have full diet food………

I hope such beneficial cooperation between both sides can continue… I also hope you may see use of my point of view over the middle east… and due to the long history of the amicable relations between the Arab people and the American people and due to the connectivity between all people who aspire to be free, I’d like to make sure you and other Arab leaders have no mistaken idea about our stance regarding the Arab people…….

Our stance still contains loyal friendship… and I believe the future will enrich the amicable ties between our countries and peace-loving peoples as long as this relation is based on mutual respect of each other’s opinions and on mutual concern to enhance the status of mankind… and also based on the common contribution in the special efforts to eliminate causes of international tension”……..

Yours Sincerely,
John F. Kennedy

That’s how Kennedy spoke of Egypt’s accurate plans and its orientation towards industrialization… and its role in international politics and mutual respect!

Our immune system… Egyptian patriotism ordeal

Dr. Gamal Hassan, the psychiatry medicine consultant in the UK and distinguished Egyptian novelist, has disagreed with me over the harms that hit our Egyptian immune system. I mentioned some of these harms in previous articles regarding how such extremist terrorist Cancer, called muslim brotherhood, spread through our Egyptian society.

She said: “Dear friend… let me disagree with you, despite your accuracy in describing the harms you listed before; I believe the other side of the chaos we witness these days is our resistance to survive the upheaval that is hitting the whole world due to corrupt souls of mankind on all levels. This is only the Egyptian episode of this series. Remember how Egyptians turned the June, 5 1967 defeat into perseverance in June, 9 and 10 of the same year and through the war of attrition until the great victory in October, 6 1973. Hope is born out of pain. We have hope in God. Hope exists as long as God exists, and God is eternal”. These were Dr. Gamal Hassan’s words.

I agree with her. Despite the harms that hit our Egyptian immune system, especially what affected its cultural and human existence in the core, I believe our beloved country possesses all resistance and renaissance factors.

It’s what Egyptians did throughout their history; they resisted, as deterioration and decline have hit our country throughout Egypt history; ancient, middle, modern, and contemporary. And if a general equation is to represent and predict movement of our Egyptian history, it will be a sine wave signal fluctuating between deterioration and renaissance. But, at that time, the nation was able to face these challenges and stand against such deterioration. In this article, we will continue talking about our Egyptian immune system by writing about resilience factors and our ability to start over.

What Dr. Hassan said about June, 5 defeat and what later followed when Egyptian people resisted and fought bravely until October, 6 victory was achieved, goes directly in the heart of what I said before. As there is great difference between harm caused by a sudden hit with a big club that keeps you paralyzed for a period of time, and other harm caused by cancer stealthily sneaking into your blood and bones until it takes control of all your body. The latter is a malignant disease that keeps eating your healthy cells unceasingly until it’s too late to recover. That’s why we were able to resist after the defeat; our Egyptian national immune system was still functioning well; its ability to resist and fight was represented in our ardent patriotic will. But later our ability to resist weakened because harm this time was caused by cancerous cells that spread through the Egyptian body itself; those malignant cells that took command of our country until they came to power!

Another major harm that targeted our collective immune system was the profoundly-misleading mix between reaching a solution to the Palestinian cause against the Hebrew state and colonial Zionist occupation, and destroying the geographical, historical, cultural and civilized constituents of our Egyptian patriotism. The concept behind this is that all that may contradict with such approach to deal with the Zionists has to be exterminated and is considered against free thinking and economic interests necessities governed by regional and international balance of powers. Such concept backs the Hebrew state to be the most powerful state in the region. In this way, gaining satisfaction and approval of the so-called state became the golden gate for the heart and soul, and treasury as well, of the USA.

In this context, terms of patriotism, nationalism, Arab nation, third world, and global liberation movement were mocked. Not only were these terms mocked as definitions, but as concepts as well, such concepts that played a role we may disagree about how important it was in our country’s history, but it did exist. Those who “committed” such mix went far in attacking others and even widened their circles of influence until they became in control of some media and journalistic outlets. People reacted to such diverged national stances by repulsion and so the public opinion was divided, clearing the way for the extremist terrorist religion-dressed cancer to pass through our social depth.

That worked well for the benefit of the extremist religious perspective that has no definition for homeland in its dictionary. In their opinion, their religion is homeland, Quran is the constitution; and legacy of al-Banna[1], Qutb[2], al-Mawdudi[3], al-Albani[4], Ibn Taymiyyah[5], and others are their doctrine and nothing else.

If we added to all the above-mentioned the deteriorated education system; cinema, theater, and TV drama poor works and low production; absence of popular cultural centres; and civil society communities and non-governmental organizations funded by parties aiming at dismantling Egypt and hitting its national compositions in the core, such organizations and groups that went wild and became stronger than the central state in many fields, we would realize the tragic ordeal we have now.

Challenges like foreign invasion and occupation of our country or any other Arab state, with the Palestinian cause in the heart of all this, have been great stimuli of our Egyptian will to react and resist in all battle fields. But the enemy became a friend, and then an ally, and later a master that has the right to grant and deny through the USA gate.

And so, one finds himself facing a great challenge; that is searching for our lost Egyptian immune system and inquiring how to reactivate it in order to work as usual.
